Why I made this series
When I first used Ask Runyu, I brought my own questions: how to develop watercolor services, and how to move forward when a new idea appeared. It offered suggestions I could try, and I also began following Runyu's talks and paying attention to how these tools were being made, step by step.
I have a habit of noticing the tools someone uses and the things they do once they have earned my trust. Where I can, I try those things for myself. With some shared experience, words I previously only understood intellectually can gradually become something I feel for myself.
This series began in the same way. Ask Runyu felt like an adviser to me, and I wanted to show that through stories set in a historical world. Putting reading, revising, and choosing topics into a character's situation required me to think clearly: what problem had appeared, why was this feature useful, and how should the story continue? My earlier experience of painting, photography, and writing also found a place in the process.
Later, I wanted to draw and write down the ideas that arose while learning. What remains here is a record of actually using, learning, and digesting those ideas, and of trying to turn them into work.
This is my personal learning and creative series. The dialogue and settings are creative dramatizations; specific quotations are attributed to their sources. The learning notes retain my own understanding and feelings.

Everyone is on holiday. Why are you still holding that up?
Ah.
The channel is finished, and so is the pavilion. Everyone says it is good, but nobody sits down.
Mm. Timber, dimensions, joints... this looks like an inspection checklist. I’ll make you a new poster.
Not so fast. Do people not understand it, or is it uncomfortable to sit here?
An exam even on holiday?
Mm. No exam. We’ll use “Read a Book with Me.”
Read Real Needs, with a question in mind.
Mm. The pavilion is finished. People praise it but won’t sit down. This inspection checklist... What should we check?
Don’t just listen to the compliments. First look at how people actually sit.
Is this bench trying to fry me?
Look. The shade is in here, while the seats and tea are outside.
I was so focused on building it solidly that I forgot how people would rest. Mm.
Now let’s take a photograph of our own space.

This is good. The seat isn’t hot, and there’s tea too!

This looks so nice. The moon is enormous!
It is pretty. But where does it say when the meal starts, or where we eat?
Found it! Under the osmanthus tree, smaller than an ant.
Hey!
The channel workers are coming too. Add two tables!
All right, the numbers have changed again. This needs another edit.
Why are you still working?
The picture needs to look good, but the arrangements need to be clear too. I just finished the layout when more information arrived.
Try Poster Design. Give it the arrangements for this occasion and the style you want, together.
The time and place are right. Let’s hang it up.
This time, we don’t need a magnifying glass to find dinner.
Everything is ready. Let’s eat!
Wait. We still need our own Mid-Autumn greeting picture.
How come I’m still at work even inside the picture?
With you standing there, everyone knows who built the channel.
No more repairs today. Come back and sit with us.
Tonight, at last, we don’t have to edit pictures while eating cold food.
Some of the time we save should be kept for ourselves, and for our families.
May your work bear fruit, and may you rest with an easy mind.

I have built channels for years. Drainage and diversion, I can handle both!
Anyone who needs repairs, come to me!
They heard you. Why does nobody stop?
Strange. The man from the next county says exactly this! When he finishes, villagers compete to invite him to their fields.
I copied him exactly. Why doesn’t it work?
What did you copy?
Unroll the plan, announce my name, then pat my chest like this.
The nearby villages all know the channels I’ve built. Anyone who needs work, come and see me when we finish here.
Come to my place first. My field is still waiting for water!
See? As soon as he spoke, someone invited him!
I didn’t miss a word he said or a move he made.
The manner is certainly identical.
What did he say before those words?
Just a few questions about the fields. Nothing special.
Tell me those few questions.
The upper fields are full, but yours still hasn’t had its turn for water. Right?
Exactly! By the time it reaches me, there is only a trickle.
Has it always been like this, or did it start recently?
It’s been quite a while. I wait half a day and can’t irrigate even half the field.
I’ll walk along the channel first. We need to see whether the water is diverted before it gets here or leaks on the way.
I’ll take you. Come and see exactly where the problem is.
I remembered how he patted his chest. I forgot why people gathered around him.
They heard their own difficulties in his words, so they wanted to keep listening. Your questions must get there first.
Then which one do we take first this time?
The measuring stick. Let’s look at the fields first. Bring the plan too, but I won’t rush to unroll it this time.
Uncle, at what point does the water stop flowing in your field?
Come with me. I’ll show you.
All right.

After the recruitment notice went up, talent began arriving in the capital. But one innkeeper could not persuade guests to stay.
Sir, people are coming into the capital. Why won’t they come into my inn?
Who do you want to keep?
Applicants. They need a few nights.
If they can stay with relatives, why pay for an inn?
Their relatives may live far away, and it may be noisy at night. They won’t rest well and still have a journey the next morning.
First explain who needs a room. Don’t begin by only praising the inn.
Mm.
Your pictures all show distinguished guests. Would ordinary people dare stay here?
We have cheaper rooms too. Craftsmen and scholars have stayed. I can show what the rooms are like and what they paid.
Mm. Let them know they can afford it too.
But it is cheaper outside the city. Why stay near the recruitment hall?
For an early appointment, consider when the gates open and how long the trip takes. Saving on a room but missing registration is no bargain.
Explain that calculation clearly so guests know how to choose.
Mm.
I dislike noise and want to save some silver. Which room suits me?
This street-facing one. Open the window and there’s a tavern. So lively!
Has he come to apply for a position, or listen to songs?
Then try a shared room in the inner courtyard. Quieter and cheaper. Are you comfortable sharing?
That’s right. First ask whether it suits them.
But you call it quiet. Why should I believe you?
I’ll show you the actual room, how far it is from the street, and what previous guests say.
Don’t just take my word that it’s quiet.
Once the room is paid for, is lamp oil extra?
Lamp oil is extra.
So the harder you study, the more expensive your stay?
Before guests come, I’ll list what the rate includes, extra charges for lamp oil and hot water, and the full total.
What if they book a few days later?
Ask their arrival day and number of nights. Check availability and say how long a room can be held, so they don’t arrive with nowhere to stay.
Once they have an itinerary, explain the arrangements. No need to urge every person you meet to book.
Sir, should I put all seven things on one notice?
Don’t rush to fill it. Where do guests most often get stuck?
They keep asking how much they’ll spend beyond the room rate.
Then explain that first. Answer the other questions as they come.
Do you know where to begin writing this time?
Ah. What I should write is already in the questions guests ask.
Once they have an itinerary, answer their questions clearly. Then let them remember your inn.

Sir, at today’s tea gathering I began with building channels and saving crops. Why did no one respond?
Which table were you at?
The one with the most people. They were all discussing the capital’s new tea.
They were asking whether the tea was fragrant, and you told them how long your channels were?
Which table should I go to?
Were there any people who farm, talking about this year’s harvest?
Yes. Some landowners nearby said the downstream fields had no water again.
That is a table you could listen at.
First understand whether the river has no water, or whether the water cannot reach the fields.
Right! They said there was still plenty of water upstream, but they couldn’t get it downstream.
At that point, what could you do to help them?
I could ask where the water starts to run short, draw that stretch, and look at it together.
If you can help someone understand the immediate problem, they will naturally want to keep talking.
This time, I won’t give my name first.

Buy your own.
You work for him every day. Ask him to give you a few extra.
When something is free, you don’t value using it. I need to pay and try it myself to know how it feels for other people.
And the strategist’s own use?
He buys his too.
The wages you just earned...
Spend it where you earn it. Not a penny gets to come home.
Let’s try another style for this one.

I asked in the front hall about recruiting talent. I’d also like you to revise the announcement speech, Master. The situation is...
Take out this opening passage of praise first.
I haven’t even read it out. How did you know?
The text you left when asking earlier came through with you. No need to explain again.
But I spent half the night writing that opening!
The reasons are here. By the time you say who you need, people may already have left.
Recruiting channel builders. If you can read the water flow and build a channel, come and apply.
I understood that sentence.
But an old farmer can build channels without ever having been a craftsman. Might he think we don’t want him?
Mm. We need to add that requirement.
Let’s keep revising.
Anyone who can build channels may try. Former craftsmen and experienced farmers are all welcome.
First say what needs doing. Then make clear who can come.
And “heaven and earth’s great virtue”?

Achuan earned the king’s recognition for his skill in building channels.
By day he worked on channels. After work, he listened to books.
I’d like to hear about water management. Still ten tokens?
Six is enough. Here are four back.
Does that mean you won’t cover the later chapters?
Listen to a passage. Compare it with your book.
Before digging a channel, first see where the water comes from.
Yes, that’s the passage.
Sir, other places are raising prices. Why are we charging less?
We found a way that costs less. So we pass on the saving and charge less.
Couldn’t we keep charging the same?
He came to listen to a book. Don’t keep him worrying about the cost.

Last time, the king’s Heavenly Craft Notice attracted many capable people. But the first visitor nearly put him to sleep.
I’m Achuan, a commoner. As a child, my father told me to study diligently. He said his own father had taught him that.
I asked what you can do, not who taught whom in your family.
Please be patient, Your Majesty. My skills are on page seven.
Wait. Did you draw this?
Did you draw this plan?
Yes.
Did you build the channel too?
I built it with the villagers.
And afterward?
Spring water reached the fields, and the crops were saved.
Why put something that important on page seven?
I was afraid that being too direct would not sound scholarly.
Real ability should come first.
You can begin with a result, a question, or the immediate difficulty.
If you want the king to keep listening, begin with the result.
Same facts, different words. Your ability belongs in those opening sentences, not on page seven.
Go and tell him again.
You again?
Please hear me once more, Your Majesty.
Your Majesty, last year Dongxiang suffered a drought. The villagers and I brought spring water through a channel and saved the crops.
I have come today to build proper channels for more villages.
Where does the water come from? How does it reach the fields?
Look, Your Majesty. The spring is high. Water flows down. Dig along the hillside to bring water into the fields.
Leave the plan. Come closer and explain it in detail.
And the first six pages?
To wrap the drawings in.
Ha ha!
Sir, can revising a speech get someone without ability through too?
Wouldn’t one more question from the king expose them?
Then what is revision for?
So people with real ability don’t lose out for lack of words.
Then what shall we talk about first today?
Start with what you most want to understand.

As the king read with Strategist Runyu and applied it to government, the court grew steadier and trades prospered.
There is less fighting now. But river works, finance, schools, and trade all lack capable people.
Summon the painter. Make me a notice to recruit talent!
The recruitment notice is ready. Please inspect it, Your Majesty!
I drew Your Majesty to inspire awe across the realm!
I want to recruit talent, not invite people to stare at my face!
An envoy from Strategist Runyu requests an audience!
Please do not be angry, Your Majesty. Strategist Runyu anticipated this trouble and sent a new pouch of help.
What is it this time?
The Heavenly Craft Notice.
It organizes the content, extracts a headline, separates the main points, and chooses a style. Only then does it become a notice.
The very same recruitment decree. This time, the people can finally understand it.
Sir, a letter from the capital! Since the new notice appeared, experts in river works, finance, schools, and trade have sent their calling cards.
Can a single notice really do so much?
A notice cannot recruit talent for you. But it can help talented people understand why they should come.
And beauty?
Beauty makes people pause.
Sincerity makes them stay.

After Strategist Runyu left, the king finally had someone to ask when problems arose.
I have read half a roomful of books, yet my mind is still blank.
Your Majesty, Strategist Runyu sent me with a new ability: “Read a Book with Me.”
Read with me? Sit beside me and read it aloud?
Not to read it aloud for Your Majesty.
To help Your Majesty understand it, then put it to use.
Sir, does reading more books mean having more solutions?
Not necessarily.
First find the sentence you can use right now.
First unpack the book’s judgments, then compare them with the problem before you.
Finally, keep just one thing you can do right now.
So what I lack is not the next book. It is putting this one to use.
Sir, did the king understand?
It only counts when he puts it to use.
